An Introduction to Glen Ellyn

The Village of Glen Ellyn is a charming suburb of Chicago, located 24 miles directly west of the city. Glen Ellyn has a long-established history dating back to 1834 when the first settlement there was established. The community in Glen Ellyn currently has a population of 27,450 all living in the 60137 zip code.

Whether it’s peace and tranquility you desire, or a bustling social scene, Glen Ellyn offers both in abundance. Downton Glen Ellyn is located on the north side of town and continues to add new shops and restaurants to an already impressive collection.

The most popular of these is Fire + Wine, but there are many others to enjoy in downtown Glen Ellyn including A Toda Madre, Blackberry Market, Maize + Mash, and Made in Italy Trattoria, just to name a few.

If the bar scene is more your style, downtown Glen Ellyn has you covered there as well. Shannon’s Irish Pub, North Side Bar & Grill, Main Street Pub, and McMae’s on Main are all recommended and unique in their own way. 

One of Glen Ellyn’s best features is Lake Ellyn, and Lake Ellyn Park which is just north of downtown. The Lake Ellyn neighborhood of Glen Ellyn is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in town, and one of the most expensive. Property values tend to be higher in North Glen Ellyn for a variety of reasons, but one of the main factors in addition to proximity to the lake is the ability to walk to downtown.

Running through the middle of downtown Glen Ellyn is a Metra train line which heads east to Chicago and goes as far west as Elburn. Having a train readily available is a luxury for all residents, but especially for those that can comfortably walk to the station. The train is also a necessity for many commuters who work in downtown Chicago. Whether it’s for work or for play, proximity to the train is an important factor to consider when moving to Glen Ellyn. 

Parks and Recreation

If greenspace is what you desire, Glen Ellyn may be the town for you. There are seemingly endless parks, preserves and places to experience nature no matter what part of town you’re in. Below is a map showing all the parks throughout Glen Ellyn, with each represented by a green tree:

The red flag on the north end of the map shows Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center. Ackerman SFC is a 7,000 square foot workout facility featuring a climbing wall, a running track, personal training, day care, three full-size basketball courts and an indoor synthetic turf field.

Ackerman Park is just to the east of the sports and fitness center and is an athletic hub that features six lighted baseball diamonds, soccer fields, volleyball courts, a playground and eight youth baseball/softball fields. Just southeast of Ackerman is Churchill Woods, a 255-acre forest preserve.

Roosevelt Road is the main east/west road in town and just to the south of Roosevelt is the local golf course, the Village Links of Glen Ellyn featuring both a 9-hole and an 18-hole course. The Village Links recently renovated their clubhouse and restaurant, Reserve 22, in addition to a reimagination of the challenging 18-hole course. The other golf course in town is Glen Oak Country Club which is located on the northeast edge of the village.

The beach ball in the middle of the map shows Sunset Pool. Sunset is located at the corner of Main Street and Fairview Avenue and borders the Sunset neighborhood to the south. Sunset features two water slides and two diving boards in addition to separate lap pools for the serious swimming enthusiast.

The two blue flags on the map show the Main Street Recreation Center to the west and the Spring Avenue Recreation Center to the east. Both feature playgrounds and wide-open green spaces prime for a pick-up game of football.

On the map you can also see two other features of living in Glen Ellyn which is the proximity to Yorktown Center to the southeast and the College of DuPage to the south. Having COD so close is a great bonus for many in the area and provides a source of housing demand for investors.

Yorktown Center features a shopping mall, movie theater and restaurants and if you go a little further east you have even more shopping amenities and movie screens available at Oakbrook Center.
